I think, especially in a small town setting, that having a consistent presence in the community is key. I believe as followers of Jesus we are called to be 'missional' in our communities. And by that, I mean that we are intentional about talking to people in our neighborhoods, in our workplaces, and in the natural flow of life. Too often, Christians isolate themselves from 'the world' and in turn, stop living life in the larger community, and only live it within the context of their church or Christian community. And when we do that, we step out of the natural ways to show the love of Jesus to others.
As a coach in a local school, I have the natural opportunity to be IN the community. I am given the chance to build relationships with both students and adults, all around the context of basketball. I have the opportunity to be a part of a school's staff. These are doors that don't always open for pastors, and I am humbled at the avenues God has created.
Personally, coaches have played a huge part in my growth as a man. In fact, my high school basketball coach served as a great testimony of a Godly man. My dad was a coach of both high school football and wrestling for several years. Coaches help shape things like character, integrity, work ethic...life skills and traits that students need.
Now don't misunderstand me though. The reason I choose to coach basketball is not just because I feel called to be missional in the community. That is part of it, but honestly, that is a calling on all our lives, not just pastors. Frankly the thrill of forming a team, determining roles, and then pursuing a successful season is without a doubt a huge reason I coach. I love to compete, and I love the leadership challenge of coaching.
And as a pastor, I love to compete, to be agressive in our pursuit of the Great Commission, and I love the leadership challenge of pastoring a growing church. Of forming a team, and determining roles, and then going for it!
For the glory of God, no matter the arena.

Agreed! (insert thumbs up icon) That is great your continuing to coach. I too think it's important to stay plugged into community stuff, but isn't always the "easy" thing to do...I'm glad our kids want to play sports and be involved in stuff, it gives me a chance to meet new people in this area. :)
